Do not defend your listening

What to say when your wife says you don’t listen

When your wife says, “You don’t listen,” the fastest reflex is often evidence: the times you did listen, the detail you remember, the reason you interrupted. That may defend your record, but it does not answer what happened in this conversation. Start with the behavior in front of you instead of litigating the word never.

1

Do not argue with the absolute first

Words like never and always can feel unfair. You can come back to precision later if it matters. In the hot moment, proving that you listened three times last week often sounds like another way of not hearing what is being raised now.

Try: “I’m not going to argue with the word never right now. What did I miss?”
2

If you interrupted, repair that exact behavior

A specific repair is easier to trust than a general claim that you are a good listener. If you cut in, finish their sentence, look at your phone, or immediately explain yourself, name that behavior and change it in real time.

Try: “I interrupted you. Finish your thought—I’ll wait.”
3

Reflect the point before adding your side

Before explaining your intention, say back the point you think you heard in your own words. The goal is not to perform a communication technique. It is to give the other person a chance to correct your understanding before you build your response on the wrong premise.

Try: “You’re saying the problem wasn’t the task itself—it was that you had to remind me again. Is that right?”
4

Listening still allows disagreement

Hearing someone accurately does not require agreeing with every conclusion about you. Once the point is clear and they feel accurately understood, you can add your perspective without making your perspective the price of admission for being heard.

  • Hear the point.
  • Own the behavior you can own.
  • Check that you understood correctly.
  • Then add your perspective briefly if it is still necessary.
