3 better moves for the same fight
A defensive answer usually responds to the accusation. A better move responds to the problem underneath it. These are not magic phrases; they are short ways to stop turning one tense moment into a courtroom.
“You never listen.”
Don’t answer: “I do listen.”
What may be underneath: Do you actually have room for what I’m saying?
Try: “I interrupted you. Finish your thought.”
“This isn’t fair.”
Don’t start listing everything you’ve done.
What may be underneath: Something feels uneven right now.
Try: “What feels uneven this week?”
“Calm down.” is on the tip of your tongue.
Don’t tell them how calm they should be.
What may be underneath: I need to know you understand this matters to me.
Try: “I can see this matters. Do you want me to listen, or help solve it?”
