Practice Thread: Name the move you usually make
Husband Rebuild Team · 6d ago
This is an official practice thread from the Husband Rebuild Team. Most men default to one protective move under pressure. Some pursue harder: explain, fix, push for a resolution tonight. Some withdraw: go quiet, get busy, leave the room. Neither is a character flaw. Both are attempts to feel safe when connection feels shaky. The move you cannot see, you cannot change. So the drill is simple. In a reply, finish this line for yourself: "When things get tense between us, my usual move is ____." Keep it to your move only. No description of her, no story about who was right. You do not have to fix it in this thread. Naming it is the rep. Once you can catch yourself mid-move, you have a choice you did not have before. We will reply with the likely cost of that move and one smaller version you can try next time.

If your move is the pursuer version (explain, push, resolve it now), the cycle usually runs pressure to more distance to more pressure. The risk move is the follow-up that demands a response. Underneath is often a fear that unresolved means unsafe. The softer version is to state your want once and then let it sit. Next action: next time you feel the push, set a timer for twenty minutes before you say or send anything.

If your move is the withdraw version (go quiet, go cold, get busy), the cycle usually runs distance to her reaching harder to more distance. The risk move is disappearing without a word, which reads as punishment even when it is self-protection. Underneath is often overwhelm, not indifference. The softer version is one honest sentence before you take space: 'I need a bit of quiet, I am not gone.' Next action: draft that sentence now so it is ready when you need it.
